An Army captain who impersonated as a Muslim woman in an attempt to allegedly rob a bank was nabbed by alert security guards.

Media reported that a woman in hijab walked in to National Savings Bank, Kandy, with a letter written in English, demanding to meet the manager.

However, the suspect’s mannerisms aroused suspicion and the security guards intervened. When the guards spoke to her, her voice was that of a man. At that moment the suspect attempted to flee, but was overpowered and handed over to the police.

When nabbed the suspect also had a knife and a toy pistol.

Allegedly his intention was to hand over the letter to the manager and request him to hand over Rs3 million confidentially or threaten to shoot him.

Later it was revealed that the suspect was a Captain in the Army. A resident of Katugastota, he works with the Kotmale Army Cantonment in the language translation unit.

He alleged that he was forced to impersonate and demand the ransom because he was in debt.

Apparently he had rehearsed his role a few weeks earlier but finally failed to execute it fruitfully.

Investigations are still on.
