A lady from Netherlands was arrested by Kandy police, on a tip off received at the mobile unit of the police, for disgracing Lord Buddha by engraving a tattoo of Lord Buddha prominently on her back, ‘Gossip Lanka’ news reported on February 13.

She was arrested while she was dining at a popular hotel in Kandy, the picturesque hill capital in the Central province of Sri Lanka.

At the time of the arrest, she had been wearing a loose jacket through which the tattoo of Lord Buddha was visible.

The 26-year-old Pitina Irain Bronko when questioned had confessed that she got the tattoo engraved in Netherlands and was unaware that this would in anyway bring disgrace to Sri Lanka’s Buddhist culture.

She said that with the intention of worshipping ‘Dalada Maligawa’ (the Temple of Tooth Relics), she had come with her husband to the historic city of Kandy.

The police had warned her after the confession and released her after a fine of Rs1,000.
