'James Bond' arrested in Sri Lanka

Police in Sri Lanka have nabbed a suspected criminal who was outfitted like the legendary spy James Bond – complete with a foreign-made MM-type pistol with 28 bullets, four mobile phones, eight SIM cards, a Rambo knife, a motorcycle with fake papers, a forged national identity card and a counterfeit driving licence.

The arrested man, who is alleged to have used a fake name, is suspected of involvement in two murders and several cases of extortion.

The man, who was arrested at Padukka, a suburb of Colombo, was a resident of Divulapitiya in Gampaha district, according to the ‘Mirror’ newspaper.

The High Court in Negombo and the Magistrates Courts of Gampaha and Minuwangoda had released warrants in relation to three cases filed against him.

The suspect has been handed over to the Mirihana Special Investigation Unit in Nugegoda for further investigations.

3 big credit card fraudsters held

Three Sri Lankan suspects who allegedly attempted to withdraw a huge sum of Rs4 billion using several forged credit cards, were arrested by the Special Task Force on Thursday night at Bristol Street in the capital Colombo, the ‘Dinamina’ newspaper reported on Saturday.

The main conspirator of the gang had arrived from Britain while the other two suspects were from Jaffna in the country’s north.

They were arrested while attempting to withdraw money from ATM machines Sri Lanka by using forged credit cards that were made using secret numbers obtained from credit card owners in Britain. 

The main culprit confessed that they had obtained card numbers by placing a special scanner machine under the ATMs used by the credit card owners.

The STF found 13 such credit cards in their possession and the suspects said they were planning to withdraw Rs. 2 billion to Rs. 4 billion.

Schoolgirl’s burnt body found in the jungle

Police in Sri Lanka have found the charred body of a 15-year-old schoolgirl in the jungle outside her home in Ududumbara in the central hills on Tuesday, ‘The Island’ reported on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Ruwanthi Kausalya Dissanayake, daughter of a retired army officer and student of the Navodya School in Ududumbara.

The body was sent to the morgue of the General Hospital, Kandy for a postmortem examination by the Kandy Judicial Medical (JMO) and police is investigation the mystery death.
