The suspect had foreign currency totalling $25,610 and Singapore $500 hidden inside his laptop
An attempt to smuggle Rs3.3 million in foreign currency to Maldives by a young Sri Lankan chartered accountant was thwarted by a vigilant customs officer at the Bandaranaike International Airport’s departure terminal on Sunday evening, ‘The Island’ reported.
As the suspect was an accountant in a Maldivian company based in Colombo, he was a frequent traveller to Male from Colombo.
High ranking customs officer told ‘The Island’ that Assistant Superintendent of Customs Nimal Wijesiri had searched the smuggler on suspicion around 7.30 pm and found the foreign currency totaling $25,610 and Singapore $500 hidden inside his laptop case to deceive the customs.
After the money was forfeited, the suspect had been released with a warning.
