A monk and his friend who gave up monk-hood were arrested by the Karuwelagaswewa Police for drunken and disorderly conduct in Daladagama, Thabbowa.

A woman, who had been in their company, was also taken into custody, reports Ceylon Today.

The men and the woman were arrested on the night of 22 February, following a tip off received by OIC L B Abeyratne.

The man who gave up the robes had disguised himself as a man of the cloth to conceal his drunken state. The woman, who has been identified as the wife of the owner of the house, had joined the two men in the drinking binge.

Her husband had been away at work at the time. The police have discovered that the monk, who is 40 years of age, resides in a temple at Kuliyapitiya, and had  often visited the 32-year-old woman with his disrobed counterpart to spend the night when the husband was away. The former clergyman has been identified as a 42-year-old resident of Negombo.

All three were released on police bail and are due to appear in the Puttalam Magistrate's Court.
