Customs foil smuggling of gold worth Rs5 million

Two Sri Lankans were arrested by customs officials on Saturday at Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport for attempting to smuggle gold bars worth about Rs5 million in two separate incidents, ‘Daily News’ reported.

In one incident, airport authorities had detected four gold bars weighing 452 grammes (Rs. 2.25 million) in the false bottom of the hand luggage carried by a 43-year-old man from Colombo, while he was trying to board a flight to Singapore.

Customs spokesman and director Leslie Gamini said that another person, who was trying to board a flight to Chennai was stopped by customs, with six gold bars weighing 550 grammes (Rs. 2.75 million) hidden in his rectum.

“The gold was recovered by customs officers following a body search of the 56-year-old man, a resident of Kalmunai,” Gamini said.

According to Gamini, in recent times, there has been an increase in attempts to smuggle gold overseas, especially to India, where gold prices have risen sharply.
