A Sri Lankan youth who was upset because a 17-year-old schoolgirl rejected his love, stabbed her to death last Saturday morning inside her house in Aswedduma near Kimbulapitiya.
She was the youngest of a family of three and a student of Kimbulapitiya Maha Vidyalaya.
Dinushika Madurika was killed while her father and mother were away at work.
The 22-year-old suspect, a resident of Kaltota, Balangoda, had worked for a fireworks manufacturer in Dagonna, Kimbulapitiya for the past five years.
Investigations have revealed that the killer had waited inside a hut in a paddy field close to the girl’s house from 4.30am to 6am until the victim’s parents left home for work.
He stabbed her several times with a knife before neighbours rushed to the scene hearing her cries.
The attacker tried to flee after dropping the knife but the neighbours overpowered him and handed him over to the police.
He told the police that the victim was his girlfriend and he killed her because she had rejected him.
