Colombo -  Seven persons, including a university lecturer, a police officer and a military man have been arrested so far this year on grounds of child abuse, Chairman of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA), Anoma Dissanayake said yesterday (16).

Speaking at a press conference, Dissanayake elucidated on the findings of the Cyber Watch Unit (CWU) in January this year. During the period between January 1 and June 30, the CWU had noted that NCPA had received 210,314 calls on its hotline. Most complaints had been minor in nature, she said.

The CWU had also noted that over 2,500 Facebook profiles were reported for abusive remarks, of which 300 were considered serious.

The NCPA had investigated and prepared reports on 30 such profiles. In a majority of the serious cases, persons had been guilty of posting indecent images of others publicly, threatening the victim or using fake profiles.
