'Smart' woman makes tourists pay for stray dog death

By Correspondent

Colombo - Funny, but true. A dog in the Sri Lankan town of Katharagama Kandasuridugama died after being hit by a speeding Jeep transporting a group of foreigners from the Yala Wildlife Sanctuary.

A woman by the roadside began to cry and wail over the dead dog.

The foreigners travelling in the jeep felt very sad and guilty for what had happened and made a collection of SRs25, 000 and gave it to the woman.

However, the Lanka Mirror reports that no sooner had the Jeep left, than it emerged that the dog was a stray and the woman had just cashed in on the situation.

Acid threat for Negombo prostitutes

The area of Negombo, called ‘Little Rome’ in Sri Lanka, is always full of tourists and locals, always smiling.

Lately, a group of activists in Negombo have threatened to throw acid on prostitutes operating in the area.

The group has initiated a poster campaign in the area against the prostitutes, according to a website called ‘Meepura’. The posters read in Sinhala: ‘Let’s unite to get rid of prostitutes and the only way to stop and punish them is to throw acid on them’.

The website reports “There are a group of individuals in the area who believe Negombo to be ‘Little Rome’, but have decided to target prostitutes operating on the beaches and roads.
