Soldier on presidential duty nabbed buying heroin

A soldier was nabbed by the Kandy Police on Friday purchasing heroin, from a drug peddler, while on duty Mahaiyawa, Kandy, The Island reports.

Kandy Police said the soldier had been one of the security personnel posted at a point in Kandy as President Mahinda Rajapaksa was scheduled to attend a Scouts Jamboree at the Bogambara Stadium.

The suspect soldier had gone to Mahaiyawa to buy his fix after entrusting his firearm to a colleague, the police said.

Chief Inspector Pradeep Kottegoda, having taken the drug dealer into custody, with the soldier, produced the duo before the Kandy Chief Magistrate Ravindra Premaratne, who remanded them until February 27.
