In a sad Sri Lankan tale of ingratitude, an adopted daughter kept her foster mother under house arrest, teased her cruelly for being childless and did not allow her to meet even one relative, the ‘Mawbima’ has reported.

The 28-year-old woman, a mother of two, was arrested by the Women and Children’s Bureau of Negombo police on receiving information that the 73-year-old victim had been called ‘infertile’, assaulted and confined in a locked room by the accused.

The accused was bailed out on two surety bails of Rs100,000 each.

The old woman had adopted the younger one when she was a child from an orphanage, in the hope that, after growing up, she would look after her when she was old.

The foster mother had educated her adopted daughter, got her married to a prison guard and bequeathed her house worth millions of rupees and jewellery.

Police said the daughter had cruelly mocked her foster mother, who had brought her up with much affection..
