A 42-year-old man has been arrested and remanded in Sri Lanka on suspicion of raping and killing a 13-year-old girl by strangulation, the ‘Hiru News’ has reported.
Police found the teenager’s body wrapped in a bed sheet in an abandoned house near that of the victim’s.
The victim’s parents began searching for their daughter when she failed to return home after selling milk.
.Police arrested three persons on suspicion but two of them were released.
The mother of the victim said no one had seen her daughter carrying milk but except Nishantha. When we broke open the door of the abandoned house, we saw that our daughter’s body wrapped in a bed-sheet. My daughter carries milk daily around 9 am to the Milk Board. Since she did not return home till 12 noon on the day of the incident (January 28), I went to the marketplace to enquire about her. Then Nishantha told me that he had seen my daughter carrying milk but these days he was afraid of telling such things. Then I became suspicious and broke the door of Nishantha’s house along with my elder daughter and later the neighbours joined us.”
The victim’s mother further said that her elder daughter and she searched the house when police arrived. When she screamed that her daughter (victim) should be somewhere there, the police found her body wrapped in a bed-sheet and hidden in a corner.
