A court in Abu Dhabi has ordered an airline company to pay a passenger Dh30,000 in damages for a nine-hour delay in his flight from Saudi Arabia.

The passenger had told court that he suffered physically and psychologically because of the delay on the grounds that he has diabetes.

The court found that the unnamed flight arrived in Abu Dhabi airport at mid-night while it had been scheduled to land at 3pm that day.

Newspapers said the passenger, who was performing ‘Umrah’ in Saudi Arabia, told the court that there was also a delay of three hours in baggage delivery.

The court rejected his claim for Dh4 million on the grounds he had travelled for Umrah through a Haj contracting firm, which should be responsible for his ordeal.

The ruling prompted the passenger to appeal with another court, which ordered the airline to pay him Dh30,000 damages.
