Well-known UAE singer Ahlam said she is opposed to any decision to allow Saudi women to drive cars, warning that such a move could be disastrous.

“I am against a decision to allow women to drive cars in Saudi Arabia. This is the country of the Two Holy Shrines and a decision in this respect could be a disaster,” the 44-year-olld singer said on her Twitter page.

“I have nothing against Saudi women but such a decision is not acceptable. Imagine when they drive and make mistakes. They will be taken to the police station like men and this is a real problem. God may help them.”

Saudi newspapers said Ahlam’s comment drew sharp criticism from scores of Saudi women, some of whom told the singer told mind her own business.

“Other women ridiculed Ahlam on their Twitter page under a title 'Imagine this…Ahlam does not want us to drive cars… she is a selfish woman who is trading with religion considering that she drives a car.”

Born in Abu Dhabi in 1969 to an Emirati father and Bahraini mother, Ahlam is one of the most popular and richest Arab signers. She keeps shuttling between the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar and other countries and has luxury apartments in Dubai, Egypt and London.

Ahlam, who had spent her childhood in Bahrain, has often angered many women in the Gulf with her radical views.

Saudi women are set to take to streets to drive cars on Oct 26 in a fresh campaign intended to push the government to lift an age-old ban on female driving.
