Edinburgh airport closed as snow returns to UK

Fresh snowfall forced Edinburgh airport to close on Saturday as a new cold snap returned to haunt Britain.

Around 10 centimetres (four inches) of snow fell in the Scottish capital overnight and further snowfall was expected throughout the weekend, meteorological officials said.

BAA, which operates Edinburgh airport, said it had decided to close the runway until at least noon on Saturday. Other Scottish airports, including Glasgow, remained open.

The rest of Britain was spared the snow, suffering only from heavy rainfall in many parts.

Much of Britain was paralysed by two waves of cold and ice in November and over the Christmas period.

BAA faced particular criticism after London's Heathrow Airport was closed for several days, leaving tens of thousands of passengers stranded.
