Four bodies riddled with bullets were found on a road outside the Mexican Pacific beach resort of Acapulco on Monday in an apparent gangland shooting, police said.

The four men had been bound and gagged before they were shot multiple times and left on the side of a road near the airport.

Guerrero state police said they found around 40 spent casings near the bodies along with two messages attributed to gangs, without providing further details.

The state has long been the scene of a bloody feud between the La Familia gang and the Zetas, a gang made up largely of former soldiers, who have battled it out in drug violence that has convulsed the country.

More than 30,000 people have been killed in violence related to the drug trade in Mexico since December 2006, when the government launched a major military and police offensive against a number of major cartels.
