Italy liner's captain freed from prison, under house arrest

Captain Francesco Schettino is seen in this undated file photo released. Italian coastguards urged Schettino, the captain of the stricken cruise liner Costa Concordia to return to his listing ship, leaked recordings showed, as divers continued their search for survivors into the night after finding five more bodies in the half-submerged wreck. Schettino has been allowed to leave jail but is under house arrest, blamed by his employer for risking the lives of more than 4,200 passengers and crew and half a billion dollars of ship in a reckless display of bravado. The captain of the stricken cruise liner Costa Concordia was released from prison during the night and put under house arrest at his home in Meta di Sorrento, Italian media confirmed on Wednesday.

Francesco Schettino, who faces charges of multiple manslaughter and abandoning ship, arrived at his home around 2 am (0100 GMT), accompanied by police and carabinieri, as the toll in the disaster rose to 11 with another 20 people missing.
