One dead in Russia mall roof collapse

One person was killed and several wounded on Tuesday when the roof of a shopping mall collapsed in the Russian city of Saint Petersburg, local officials said.

“One person was killed and one seriously injured,” Andrei Alyabiyev, a spokesman for Russia’s emergencies ministry.

The RIA Novosti news agency quoted another ministry official as saying eight people had been injured and hospitalised for treatment of bone fractures and concussions.

Officials had earlier said the roof collapsed over a surface of 500 square metres.

Regional governor Valentina Matviyenko arrived at the scene and the government had opened a probe into a possible security breach, the Interfax agency reported.
