Ten dead in New Year crush in South Africa

Ten people died during New Year festivities in South Africa in a crush at a bar, a report by the Sapa news agency said quoting local authorities.

An inquiry had been launched into the cause of the incident in the town of Ipelegeng, about 200 kilometres (125 miles) west of Johannesburg.

"Someone should be held accountable for the incident which robbed families and the community of valuable lives," said Desbo Mohono, an elected official in charge of housing.

"We are distraught and saddened by the deaths," he added.
