A Brazilian man has been arrested on suspicion of keeping his wife locked in a squalid basement for 16 years while he lived with another woman in the same house.
Acting on a tip, police found Sebastiana Aparecida Groppo, 64, in the cellar of the house in the city of Sorocaba in Sao Paulo state.
The floor of the roughly 130-square-foot cellar was littered with faeces and dead cockroaches, Sorocaba police inspector Ana Luiza Salomone told Reuters on Thursday.
"She was found without clothes wrapped up in a blanket," said Salomone, adding that the windows had been shuttered and were covered in mold.
Joao Batista Groppo and the woman who had been living with him both were arrested on charges of illegal imprisonment. The husband, also 64, told police that he had locked up his wife of 42 years because she was mentally ill and aggressive.
Salomone said Groppo had apparently kept his wife imprisoned for two periods totaling 16 years, the second coming after 2003 when their son died in an accident.
The wife showed signs of mental problems that could have been caused by her captivity, Salomone said, but showed no signs of being aggressive and had no serious health problems.
Groppo and his companion could face up to eight years in prison, she said.

A Saudi girl suffering from obesity sought medical advice and bought a new slimming machine. But instead of losing weight, she lost her virginity, a newspaper in the Gulf kingdom reported on Saturday.
The 20-year-old girl visited a specialised clinic in the central town of Makkah and was given a prescription for losing weight, including a food diet and an exercise programme, Alriyadh said.
“She then went to a local sport shop and bought a new electric machine for exercise recommended by the shop owner,” it said.
“She installed the machine at home and exercised for nearly 10 minutes but she got down after feeling pain in her pelvis…she found out that she was bleeding and when she visited a doctor, she told her that she had lost her virginity due to the excessive speed and the strong pressure of the machine on her pelvis.”
Official set on fire by oil mafia
MUMBAI: Six people in Manmad in the Indian state of Maharashtra have been arrested for killing a government officer by setting him on fire.
Yashwant Sonawane, Additional District Collector, was on an official tour of Manmad, home to many oil depots, when he tried to stop a group of men from stealing kerosene from a tanker.
The men retaliated by pouring kerosene over him, and then setting him on fire. Sonawane died within minutes. One of his attackers- Popat Shinde - also suffered serious burns and is now hospitalised.
The murder - which took place in broad daylight and with apparently no fear of reprisal - has shocked the country, and exposed the might of the oil mafia in this region.

Woman jailed for locking up 3 kids
A woman has been jailed for cruelly imprisoning three young children in a disgusting room without clothes, food or water.
Sick Daniella Henderson left the youngsters in the squalid conditions and their ordeal only ended when the kids were seen hanging out of a window desperate for help, reports The Sun.
The police arrived at the house and found the bedroom they had been left in all day stank of urine, had no beds or furniture and had a bucket as a toilet.
The grandfather of one of the children today slammed sick Henderson's 15-month jail term as too lenient.
He told the daily: "She should have got much longer for the damage she's caused. This was not a one-off.
Dog killed for chewing up Bible
COLUMBIA: Authorities have charged a South Carolina woman with felony animal cruelty, saying she hanged her nephew's pit bull from a tree with an electrical cord and burned its body because the dog chewed on her Bible.
Animal control officers said Monday that 65-year-old Miriam Smith told them she killed a female dog named Diamond because it was a "devil dog" and she worried it could harm neighborhood children. Authorities said bond wasn't immediately set for Smith, who remains jailed in Spartanburg County after her weekend arrest.
Officials said she didn't have an attorney yet.
She faces 180 days to five years in prison if convicted.
Authorities say the remains of the dog were found under a pile of grass with part of an electrical cord around its neck.
