A group of Eurotunnel passengers travelling from Britain to France ended up back where they started after the cross-Channel rail operator forgot to unload them, the company said Wednesday.

Twenty passengers in seven cars drove onto the train at Folkestone on Saturday expecting to make the short trip across to Calais.

But on their arrival in France, Eurotunnel staff neglected to unload their wagon.

According to the company, the wagon in front had been left empty due to a fuel spill leading staff to believe the offload was complete.

The error was discovered shortly after the train left Calais, but by that stage it was too late.

The crew immediately apologised to the passengers and made arrangements for them to get back to France, a Eurotunnel spokesman said.

"We offered a full apology. This sort of thing has never happened in our 16 years of operations, it is deeply embarrassing for us," said the spokesman.
