Police in Colombia were investing a flighty smuggling operation after they nabbed a pigeon carrying 45 grams (1.6 ounces) of drugs to a prison.

Authorities said the bird - loaded with 40 grams (1.4 ounces) of marijuana and five grams (0.2 ounces) of crack-cocaine - had apparently been trained to take the stash to Bucaramanga’s Modelo prison, Colombia’s Colprensa news agency reported.

When the pigeon fell near the facility and was having trouble taking off again, prison guards who came to its rescue were surprised to find that it was weighed down by packets of drugs tied to its wings.

The bird was put in the care of an environmental protection group while the case remained under investigated by the Bucaramanga police force.
