A 58-year-old tourist has received 50 stitches to his elbow after being bitten by a shark in Exmouth in Western Australia's north.

The Victorian man was snorkelling with his wife in Cape Range National Park shortly before 5:00pm yesterday when he was attacked.

Police say the couple made their own way to a hospital.

It is unclear at this stage what species of shark was involved in the attack.

Warning signs have now been erected at the remote beach.
