If Arsene Wenger was looking for confirmation of what he, most of us and all of Manchester United knew, it came from within his own squad.
Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere speaking in an interview to the Mirror is quoted as saying, “He's (Berbatov) a great player. He has played for Manchester United. Players who don't have ability don't play for Man United.”
We could end the quote there and pull it out of context to suggest Wilshere was adding fuel to the Berba rumours swirling at the Emirates; rumours Wenger has done his best to negate.
But the fact is, Wilshere goes on to talk about how Arsenal has enough of depth in terms of attacking.
The question is enough of depth for what? To win the Premier League. Most pundits right now believe Arsenal do not, at least not compared to Manchester City.
Dimitar Berbatov cut a frustrated figure when Fulham played Arsenal last weekend.
But he showed enough of skill and steel to remind anyone who was watching that he still has it.
Berbatov could still be Wenger’s surprise January transfer move.
The manager remained tight-lipped on suggestions he is eyeing a move for Juventus forward Mirko Vucinic in the January transfer window, although he conceded that he was hoping to strengthen his squad.
"We are looking at potential possibilities for us to get someone in, but we are not especially in for Vucinic," he told reporters.
"We are not on any special case. I would love to announce something that would excite you and me, but I don't have the possibility to do it."
