The empire has crumbled.

Now, what to do of the ruins?

The new kings will circle and pick off the best of the remnants.

Wayne Rooney to Chelsea. Nemanja Vidic to one of the Milans. Rio Ferdinand to Twitter. Robin Van Persie… well, for United fans this could get a whole lot worse before it gets any better.

The Premier League is unforgiving and relentless in its destruction of great teams – Blackburn Rovers, Leeds, Forest… Granted the tradition, backing and pedigree and United makes a one season slump look like the absolute maximum.

The question now at Old Trafford is not who will come in, but how many of their world-class stars will go.

David Moyes has steered his team into the perfect storm. Nobody better than Jose Mourinho at Chelsea to profit from it.

Rooney and Vidic both have begun to see press headlines swirl with their names on transfer lists, with contract extensions not being renewed.

Moyes may well have to build from ground zero. Because that is what his team will be reduced to at this rate.

While the UK press linked Rooney with Chelsea and multi-million pound transfer deal, Vidic’s agent has refused to commit to a contract extension at Old Trafford.
