Real Madrid are being linked with a shock swoop for Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck.

According to the People, Welbeck’s contract situation at Manchester United has alerted Madrid boss Jose Mourinho who is believed to be a big fan of the pacey attacker.

However, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has dismissed suggestions that Welbeck is refusing to sign a new contract with the club.

The 21-year-old is reported to be earning around £15,000-a-week at the moment but wants an extension to his existing contract which ends in 2013 with a £60,000-a-week deal.

United are said to be unwilling to match Welbeck’s needs and Mourinho could be ready to make either a January or summer swoop for the England international.

However Ferguson has moved to quash rumours that there is an issue with the striker who has scored eight goals in all competitions this season.

"There is no issue," Ferguson told Sky Sports.

"We know the situation well with Danny. There is nothing to worry about there."

Welbeck has found some good form for United this season following a beneficial loan spell with Sunderland during the 2010/11 campaign.

Ferguson has rewarded the youngster with 16 Premier League outings this season and Welbeck hasn’t let his side down.

Real had scouts at five United games in December and January with Mourinho considering an overhaul of his frontline in the summer, with Chelsea target Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria, who is wanted by Manchester City, facing possible exits.
