Wayne Rooney said he would cherish the opportunity to become England captain, but backed Steven Gerrard to get the job once a new coach is installed to replace Fabio Capello.
"For everyone asking I would love to be England captain. But that's up to new manager to decide. Gerrard is perfect choice for me," Rooney wrote on his Twitter account on Saturday.
Rooney scored both goals on Saturday as his Manchester United side beat Gerrard's Liverpool 2-1 in a stormy Premier League clash at Old Trafford.
He has netted 28 goals and been sent off twice in his 73 internationals.
A favourite of England fans, he angered many of them during the 2010 World Cup finals after a dismal 0-0 draw with Algeria.
As he passed TV cameras, he shouted into them: "Nice to see your home fans boo you. That's loyal supporters".
Rooney later apologised.
Gerrard is currently one of the favourites to become captain, and the midfielder currently holds the same responsibility at Liverpool.
