Lasith Malinga's participation in the World Twenty20 is in doubt after the pace ace requested Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to allow him to step down as captain.

Sri Lanka's World T20 winning captain has been plagued by knee injuries and played only the opening match of the Asia Cup against UAE.

Test and one-day captain Angelo Mathews took over the captaincy before skipping the final league match against Pakistan handing Dinesh Chandimal the armband.

Sri Lankan media reported that Malinga would be available as a player if selected while SLC have not confirmed whether they have accepted to his request to stand down as captain.

Malinga, who was rested for the three-match series, led Sri Lanka to victory in the last World T20 held in Bangladesh 2014 after taking over the captaincy from Chandimal for the last three games.
