Mumbai Indians continued their winning streak in the Champions League Twenty20 tournament by snatching their second victory from the jaws of defeat in a last-ball thriller against Trinidad & Tobago on Monday night.
Having stunned IPL champions Chennai Super Kings in their opening pool A match with a ball to spare, this time it was the turn of the West Indian side to be at the receiving end albeit in a low-scoring match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.
If Trinidad & Tobago collapsed from 52 for two to 98 all out, Mumbai Indians outdid the opposition by collapsing to 37 for five at the halfway mark of their innings.
However, a productive sixth wicket stand of 32 between Ambati Rayudu (36) and R Sathish helped Mumbai bounce back.
A six by Lasith Malinga in the last over, when 10 were needed off five deliveries, seemed to have sealed the issue but two run outs, including that of Rayudu, complicated the issue before a desperately run brace off the final ball gave Mumbai another famous win.
Malinga caused the early damage when Trinidad batted but it was skipper Harbhajan Singh who wreaked havoc grabbing three wickets in his four-over spell, including that of Darren Bravo who greeted him with a six.
The result was a bitter pill to swallow for Trinidad for whom Ravi Rampaul shone with the ball sending down an initial spell of 3-0-13-3 and conceding a mere four runs in the penultimate over. An effort which turned out to be in vain as Lady Luck smiled on Mumbai Indians.
