Fahad Ansari of Phoenix Medicine and Vikranth Shetty of Danube Lions played stellar roles in leading their sides to easy wins over Seven Seas Strikers and NMC Healthcare for whom Asim Ijaz’s fine century went in vain in the DCC Elite Cup 50 overs tournament played at the Fair ground Oval in Dubai Men’s College over the week end.

On Friday, Phoenix Medicine playing the opening game of the tournament scampered past Seven Seas Strikers riding on a superb batting display by opener Fahad Ansari who struck 72 runs. He was the main stay as he played with a lot of responsibility and then opened out to hit two sixes and four boundaries in his 88-ball knock.

Mohammad Qasim with an unbeaten 35 runs with two fours and a six , Tariq Mehmood with 26 runs, Saqlain Haider 25, and Hafiz Kaleem with 17 runs were the others to contribute. Fahad was nominated man of the match for his fine knock of 72 runs.

Earlier Seven Seas built their score around fifties from Gulam Shabbir and Muhammad Ilyas who were the main contributors. Shabbir hit four boundaries in his knock of 53 runs while Ilyas hit a couple of fours and a six in his half century. Salman Afzal hit a brisk 35 with a couple of fours and sixes to make 219 runs.

In the second game on Saturday, Danube Lions started off their campaign with a fine win over NMC Healthcare beating them by 62 runs. Danube batted first and saw most of their batsmen making 271 for 8. Vikranth Shetty and Prashanth Braggs led their charge making 41 and 40 runs each hitting four boundaries and six.

In reply, NMC healthcare lost an early wicket of Niresh Fernando but one drop Asim Ijaz played patiently showing finesse as he worked the ball around while the rest of the batting rallied around him.

He kept one end going as wickets tumbled regularly as Danube bowlers Ajmal Sheikh, Rohan Mustafa and Vikranth Shetty shared nine wickets between themselves.

Saqib Ali 17, Mohammad Kashif 23, and Faisal Amin with 17 runs were the others who got starts but failed to convert into decent scores. Asim hit six fours and remained unbeaten with 102 but his effort went in vain as NMC healthcare lost by 62 runs.

Vikranth starred with an all-round show bagging four wickets for 35 runs and making 41 runs to run away with the man of the match award.
