It’s the kind of statement that could cost Spain and their champions Real Madrid.

It is also the kind of statement that could keep Luka Modric in England. Although, he will probably not be at Tottenham.

Manchester United and Chelsea will be on alert, but it is a Real Madrid legend – Guti – who believes it is David Silva and not Luka Modric who should be at the Bernabeu.

Madrid are the frontrunners to land the Croatian midfielder despite strong interest from Manchester United and Chelsea, but Guti says that Modric has not yet proven himself in Real's class.

Guti was quoted in the Daily Mail as saying Modric: “He hasn’t even been the key man for Tottenham, I don’t think he’s done enough to play for Real Madrid.”

Guti believes Manchester City playmaker David Silva would be a far better addition to Jose Mourinho's side.

“I would go for David Silva in this position,' he added. 'I think he’s the ideal player for Real Madrid.”

Tottenham value Modric at £40million, although they are unlikely to receive an offer as high as that.

However, the inclusion of Turkey midfielder Sahin, 23, in a £30m package could ease the pain of losing their main playmaker.
