Thailand held Saudi Arabia to a 0-0 draw on Tuesday to maintain second place in Group D in the third round of Asian qualifying for the World Cup.

Saudi Arabia had beaten Thailand in 11 of their 12 previous matches, but could find no way past a strong defense orchestrated by German coach Winfried Schaefer.

Thailand goalkeeper Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool made several sharp saves, while the hosts' best chance fell to captain Datsakorn Thonglao, whose 73rd-minute freekick flew over the bar.

Thailand is two points ahead of Saudi Arabia after three games. Australia leads the group by five points after three wins from three games and is already on the verge of qualification for the fourth round.
