Tottenham says defender Younes Kaboul is expected to be out for four months after undergoing knee surgery in his native France.
Kaboul started Tottenham's opening Premier League game, a 2-1 loss at Newcastle, but missed the 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion last weekend with the problem.
The 26-year-old center back had his operation on Thursday and tweeted "surgery done with success..Now looking forward for my rehab."
Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has Jan Vertonghen, William Gallas and Steven Caulker as alternatives in central defense.
