Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini joins Manchester United from Everton for at least £26 million.

However, the champions failed in their bid to sign Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera.

Everton sign Romelu Lukaku on season-long-loan from Chelsea.

Arsenal on Monday announced that they have signed Germany international midfielder Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid for a club-record fee.

"German international midfielder Mesut Ozil has joined Arsenal on a long-term contract in a club-record deal," read a statement on the Arsenal website.

"Ozil, 24, joins Arsenal from Real Madrid, where he made a total of 159 appearances in three years. During that time he won both La Liga and the Copa del Rey."

Arsenal did not disclose how much they had paid to sign Ozil, but British media reports said the deal was worth £42.4 million ($66 million, 50 million euros).

"We are extremely pleased to have signed Mesut Ozil," said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

"He is a great player, with proven quality at both club and international level. We have watched and admired him for some time as he has all the attributes I look for in an Arsenal player.

"I have said throughout the summer that we have been working hard to bring in top quality players to this football club.

"This has involved many many people across the club and I have always had the full support of the club in making decisions on the football side."

Ozil, who underwent a medical examination in Munich, told the Arsenal website: "I am thrilled to be joining a club of the stature of Arsenal and am looking forward to playing in the Premier League.

"It will be great for my own personal development as a player and I am particularly looking forward to working with Arsène Wenger.

"From our negotiations it is clear the club has huge ambition and I look forward to being part of an exciting future."

Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla has tweeted: "Welcome Mesut Ozil. Such an amazing player!"

Arsenal's England midfielder Jack Wilshere ‏has tweeted: "Signing of the summer! Easily! Fantastic player, plays the 'Arsenal way'. Welcome Mesut Ozil absolutely buzzing!"

West Brom break their transfer record to sign Sunderland forward Stephane Sessegnon.

Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku set to re-join West Brom on loan.

Sunderland has signed Liverpool striker Fabio Borini on a season-long loan and former Liverpool left-back Andrea Dossena from Napoli.

The 22-year-old was Brendan Rodgers' first signing as Liverpool boss after completing a transfer from Serie A outfit Roma in July 2012.

The transfer window appeared to be ending with the equivalent of a tap-in goal rather than a screamer into the back of the net on Monday after Gareth Bale's world record move from Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid the day before.

With three hours remaining before it closed at 2200 GMT, a record $813.08 million of business had been completed by Premier League clubs in this window.

Unlike some years which have been dominated by frantic last-minute deals on the final day, clubs generally moved much earlier in the window for their major signings.

There was an exception at Arsenal, who looked poised to smash their club record by paying Real Madrid a widely reported $66.15 million fee for 24-year-old Germany playmaker Mesut Ozil.

Early season Premier League leaders Liverpool were also busy on the final day, signing central defenders Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori for a combined fee of about $38.91 million.

Sakho has arrived from Paris St Germain while Ilori has joined from Sporting Lisbon. They also took forward Victor Moses on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

Chelsea were fairly quiet on the final day, with their deals for Andre Schuerrle, Willian, Kevin de Bruyne, Marco van Ginkel and Samuel Eto'o already completed.

Spurs, who have already invested the 100 million euro ($131.88 million) Bale sale proceeds on seven internationals in the last six weeks at a reported cost of $171.20 million, were also quiet and there was little deadline-day movement at many other Premier League clubs.

There is no Demba Ba for Arsenal as Chelsea have refused to loan him to a rival club while Marouane Fellaini has handed Everton a transfer request to push his move to Manchester United with less than three hours remaining.

"Mesut Ozil has signed for Arsenal. Terrific acquisition," Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker has tweeted.

"No issues surrounding Arsenal signing of Ozil. They plan to announce it in next couple of hrs," BBC's David Ornstein added.

Italy goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano joined Arsenal on a season-long loan deal from Serie B club Palermo on Monday.

The 27-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Serie A team Fiorentina, will provide back-up to Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski at The Emirates.

"Viviano is a player that we have rated for some time and we are very pleased to have signed him on loan. He's experienced and has proved himself at a high level, and provides us with excellent cover to our existing goalkeepers," coach Arsene Wenger told the club website (www.arsenal.com).

Viviano, 27, has six caps for Italy and spent last term on-loan at Serie A outfit Fiorentina - where he made 32 appearances.

He began his career at Fiorentina and has previously had a spell at Inter Milan.

Crystal Palace complete hat-trick of deadline day deals

Premier League newcomers Crystal Palace, favourites to go straight back down to the English Championship, signed Scotland midfielder Barry Bannan from Aston Villa and two other players on transfer deadline day on Monday.

Palace said on their website (www.cpfc.co.uk) that manager Ian Holloway had swooped for Bannan, Reading central defender Adrian Mariappa and Huddersfield Town right back Jack Hunt.

Holloway also landed winger Jimmy Kebe from Championship club Reading on Saturday.

Bannan, 23, signed a three-year deal after agreeing to rejoin Holloway for an undisclosed fee, with the pair having worked together when the Palace coach was at Blackpool.

Villa swoop for Czech Kozak and let Ireland join Stoke

Aston Villa signed last season's Europa League top scorer Libor Kozak from Lazio on Monday and allowed midfielder Stephen Ireland to rejoin his former boss Mark Hughes on loan at English Premier League rivals Stoke City.

Czech Republic striker Kozak, 24, who netted 10 times during Lazio's run to the quarter-finals of Europe's second-tier competition last season, has agreed a four-year deal with Villa.

"Libor has an unbelievable scoring record in the Europa League, incredible really," coach Paul Lambert told the club website (www.avfc.co.uk).

"He wasn't given much opportunity for Lazio in Serie A but he showed potential in leading the line there at a strong club with a great tradition and we need somebody like him as we only have Christian Benteke really as a main target man."

The 6-foot-4 inch Kozak, who has won four caps for the Czechs, is Villa's seventh capture of this transfer window.

Villa also announced on their website that former Ireland midfielder Ireland had joined Stoke on a season-long loan.

Ireland, 27, previously played under Hughes when the Welshman was in charge of Manchester City.

"Arsenal are preparing to confirm the signing of Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid. The Gunners are set to make an announcement in the coming hours. The documentation is being signed and completed as we speak," BBC Sport's David Ornstein has tweeted.

Arsenal have agreed a 50m euros (£42.4m) deal with Real Madrid to sign Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil, according to BBC Sport.

The 24-year-old has agreed personal terms and has undergone a medical in Germany where he is on international duty.

Moses joins Liverpool on season-long loan

Victor Moses has become the third player to join Liverpool on Monday, with the forward signing on a season-long loan from Chelsea, the Premier League club confirmed.

The 22-year-old winger, who arrived at Stamford Bridge from Wigan last season, joins defenders Mamadou Sakho from Paris St Germain and Tiago Ilori from Sporting Lisbon as new arrivals on the final day of the transfer window.

The Nigeria international scored 10 goals in 42 appearances for Chelsea but faced a challenge to get game time following the arrivals of Brazil playmaker Willian, German Andre Schurrle and veteran Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o.

"There are a lot of quality players here - they're winning games and creating chances," he told the club's official website (www.liverpoolfc.com).

"It's a massive thing for me to be here."

Kaka returns to AC Milan

Kaka is returning to AC Milan, four years after leaving for Real Madrid, the Serie A club confirmed on Monday. Kaka has reportedly agreed to cut his salary by more than half to rejoin AC Milan.

Following a free transfer from Real Madrid on Sunday, Milan says on its website that the club agreed on contract terms with the former Fifa world player of the year early Monday.

Financial terms were not disclosed but the Gazzetta dello Sport reports that it's a two-year deal worth €4 million ($5.3 million) per season plus bonuses - a significant drop from the €10 million ($13.2 million) Kaka earned with Madrid.

However, the 31-year-old Kaka wants to play for Brazil at next year's World Cup in his home country and should feature more at Milan.

"I was very sad to leave this team and now it’s great to be back. I’m very happy," said Kaka moving back to Milan.

After injuring his left knee, he never established himself as a first-choice player with Madrid.

Milan said Kaka had agreed terms with chief executive Adriano Galliani for a two-year contract.

Kaka, 30, was a Milan favourite during six years at the club during which they won one Serie A title, the Champions League and the World Club Championship.

He never found his best at Real, making only 82 league appearances in his four years and losing his place in the Brazil team.

The 31-year-old hasn't played in an official match since the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti, who coached him during his best seasons at Milan when he was named Fifa world player of the year in 2007.

Liverpool sign defenders Sakho and Ilori

Liverpool have boosted their defensive options with the signings of Mamadou Sakho from Paris St Germain and Tiago Ilori from Sporting Lisbon, the Premier League club confirmed on Monday.

23-year-old Sakho is a France international, having played 14 times for his country since making his debut against England in 2010, while 20-year-old Ilori has played for Portugal at age-group level.

The pair have lifted the number of defenders signed by Brendan Rodgers during the transfer window to four, although Kolo Toure and Aly Cissokho missed Sunday's 1-0 win over Manchester United through injury.

Ilori is the sixth signing for the league leaders this summer and they are likely to add more by recruiting forward Victor Moses from Chelsea and center back Mamadou Sakho from Paris Saint-German. All three were at Anfield to watch Liverpool beat Manchester United on Sunday.

London-born Ilori, who has represented Portugal at youth level, says Liverpool "has won a lot of trophies and I want to be a part of it."

Stoke City sign Werder Bremen forward Arnautovic

Stoke City have signed Austrian international forward Marko Arnautovic from German club Werder Bremen on a four-year deal, the Premier League club said on Monday.

The 24-year-old, who was out of favour with the Bundesliga club for speeding on a German motorway, became the fifth new signing under manager Mark Hughes after Erik Pieters, Marc Muniesa, Oussama Assaidi and Juan Agudelo.

"Stoke City are delighted to sign Austria international winger Marko Arnautovic from German side Werder Bremen," Stoke said on their official Facebook page.

"He joins on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee."

West Brom take Amalfitano on loan from Marseille

West Bromwich Albion have secured France international midfielder Morgan Amalfitano on a season-long loan from Olympique Marseille, the Ligue 1 club said on Monday.

"Olympique Marseille announce the loan, with an option to purchase, of Morgan Amalfatino to the English club West Bromwich Albion," a statement on Marseille's website (www.om.net) said.

The 28-year-old has been capped once by his country, and has made 58 league appearances for Marseille, scoring twice.

Atsu is latest Chelsea signing to go on loan to Vitesse

Vitesse Arnhem have taken Ghanaian international Christian Atsu on loan from Chelsea for the season, the Dutch club said on their website (www.vitesse.nl) on Monday.

The 21-year-old winger, who played in January's African Nations Cup finals, completed his move to Chelsea from FC Porto on Sunday and was immediately sent to Vitesse to gain experience in the Netherlands.

Atsu, whom media reports said cost four million euros ($5.27 million), is the fifth player from Chelsea playing at Vitesse this season.

Cristian Cuevas and Lucas Piazon moved last month and Patrick van Aanholt and Gael Kakuta are spending a second season there on loan from the Premier League side.

Chelsea also sent teenage Croatian striker Stipe Perica to NAC Breda on loan for the season after his recent signing.

Japan captain Makoto Hasebe joins Nuremberg

Japan captain Makoto Hasebe is joining Nuremberg from Bundesliga rival Wolfsburg.

Nuremberg says the 29-year-old Hasebe signed a three-year-deal on Monday. Nuremberg sporting director Martin Bader says the transfer took so long to go through "due to the high standing he achieved in six years at Wolfsburg."

Hasebe scored five goals in 135 league games after joining the club from Urawa Red Diamonds in January 2008. He helped the team win the Bundesliga in 2009.

Also on the last day of the summer transfer window, Austria striker Marko Arnautovic is leaving Werder Bremen for Premier League side Stoke City in a transfer Bremen managing director Thomas Eichin says "suits all sides."

Arnautovic scored 14 goals in 72 Bundesliga games for Bremen since joining in 2010.

Real loan Russia forward Cheryshev to Sevilla

Real Madrid have loaned Russia forward Denis Cheryshev to La Liga rivals Sevilla for the rest of the season, the two clubs said on Monday.

The 21-year-old, whose father Dmitry was a Russia international, was called into Fabio Capello's squad for the first time last year but would be unlikely to feature much for Carlo Ancelotti's Real side this term.

"I have been living in Spain since I was five years old and I hope I will not have problems adapting to my new club," Cheryshev, who has a Spanish passport, told a news conference.

Southampton loan Zambia striker Mayuka to Sochaux

Zambia forward Emmanuel Mayuka has joined Sochaux on a one-year loan from Premier League club Southampton, the Ligue 1 outfit said on Monday.

The 22-year-old, who finished joint top-scorer with three goals when his country won the African Nations Cup last year, joined Southampton last season but made only 11 league appearances.

"The new Sochaux forward will be presented when he comes back from international duty," the French club said on their website (www.fcsochaux.fr).
