India captain Virat Kohli will miss the last two matches of his team's five-match one-day international series against New Zealand and all three matches of its Twenty20 series.
In a statement Thursday, indian cricket's governing body, the BCCI, said Kohli needs rest.
"Considering his workload in the last few months, the team management and senior selection committee is of the view that it would be ideal for him to get added rest ahead of the home series against Australia," the BCCI statement said.
India will play five one-day internationals and two Twenty20 internationals against Australia in a series starting in late February.
Rohit Sharma will captain india in Kohli's absence.
India won the opening match of the one-day series by eight wickets on Wednesday.
