Fine batting from Pakistan cricketer Umar Akmal and Owais Zia ensured GMW Royal registered a thumping 39-run victory over Vinayak Marine in the inaugural Grand Midwest Sharjah Sixes, organised by the Sharjah Cricket Council at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Thursday night.

Batting first, GMW Royals got off to a superb start with openers Zia and Akmal providing a 57-run stand for the first wicket.

Zia smashed four boundaries and two sixes to reach a fine 37 while Akmal hammered three hits to the fence and as many over it to help GMW Royal reach a superb 88 runs in five overs.

In reply, Vinayak suffered early losses but Abdul Aziz (12) and Moin Sheikh (16 not out) did their best to rescue the team but could only manage 49 for three in five overs.

GMW Royal, earlier, were unlucky to lose to Phoenix Medicine by two runs.

Phoenix Medicine scored 81 from five overs with Sharjeel Khan top scoring with 28 while Hafiz Kaleem (23) and Parvaiz Nazir (27) were the other contributors.
