CSS Homeward Bound inter-school cricket to begin on Oct. 11

The CSS Homeward Bound inter-school Cricket Championship will begin on October 11.

Ten schools, divided in two groups of five each, will contest for the top prize.

The draw for the Under-16 students’ tournament was held at the Shangrila hotel Dubai on Sunday evening.

Dubai International Academy, GEMS Modern Academy, Our Own High School, English Language School and HH Sheikh Rashid Al Maktoum Pakistani School were drawn in Group A while the Elite English School, Arab Unity School, Indian High School, Delhi Private School (Dubai) and The Winchester School were placed in Group B.

After a round robin of 25-over matches the top two teams will advance to the knock-out semifinals with the Group A winners meeting B runners-up and Group B winners clashing with A runners-up contesting for a place in the final. The semifinals and final will be contested on 30-over matches.

The inter-school cricket tournament has CSS Homeward Bound and the main sponsor. The event is supported by Smart Bag, Petrotech, MyCricket.ae and AreaSqft.com among others.

Addressing the press conference, Walid Bukhatir, Chairman of the Domestic Cricket Development Committee, praising the Dubai Cricket Council for organizing the event, said it will go a long wait in promoting cricket at grassroots level in the UAE and help inculcate interest in the game at an early stage.

Mazhar Khan of the Emirates Cricket Board Administrator thanked the DCC for their initiative in organising the championship.

“With the UAE playing in the ICC World Cup against India, Pakistan and Ireland, the event will help in the part of UAE’s development of the game,” he said.

On behalf of the ECB, he thanked Kaladaran of CSS Group for coming forward to sponsor the school event.

Unnikrishnan, representing the CSS group, said they are honoured to be part of this event coming ahead of their 20th anniversary. He wished all best to all the participating schools.

Niranjan Chawla, who always supports the DCC through the Debonairs pizza, was excited to be part of the event as he passed out through the Indian High School, one of the participating teams in the championship.

Shiva Pagarani of the DCC conducted the proceedings and explained some of the laws for the championship.

All matches will be played on weekdays, except the final which would be held on a weekend.
Matches will be played at the Fair Grounds at the Dubai Men’s College with the morning game starting at 8.30 and the afternoon match starting at 1.30 pm.

The schools can register a maximum of 20 players but a player cannot play in the final if he has not played any match earlier in the tournament.

Amin Farooq DCC Honorary Secretary also made an important announcement that the DCC would now operate from their new office of their own which would be formally thrown open soon in October at the Park Avenue Building at Dubai Silicon Oasis
