Sharjah Cricket Cub has launched the Sharjah Sixes cricket tournament to be held from April 29 to May 11, 2013.

The event will be one among the prolific tournaments in the historic venue of Sharjah opening its door to the corporate world.

It will be held under the auspices of Sharjah Cricket Council and is open to 48 corporate teams from the UAE and across the world.

Speaking at the launch of the tournament and unveiling of the website, Pakistan’s former pace ace Waqar Younis, who is the brand ambassador for the tournament, said: “I have great affiliation to Sharjah and I love this stadium.  When I was approached to become the ambassador for the event I immediately said yes. I want to come back here and want to see Sharjah get back on track.

“It’s the first time in my life I have been named as brand ambassador of anything and I’m really happy.

“I have played a lot of cricket here so I want to see more matches played in this stadium rather than anywhere else, because I feel that this stadium has lot to offer. The atmosphere is different and provides lot of entertainment,” he added.

Younis, who has had some of his best moments in this stadium claiming 114 of his total 416 ODI wickets, further said: “If I can do anything to help cricket in Sharjah, I will gladly do it. When I first played the super sixes in Hong Kong it was very entertaining. It was a big success in Hong Kong so it’s really a great tournament.”

The tournament will offer a total prize money of Dh100,000 and the match highlights will be shown on Ten Sports.

Waleed Bukhatir, vice-chairman of SCC, while thanking Younis, said: “It’s a very proud moment for me to announce the inaugural Sharjah Super Sixes. Sharjah Cricket has always ensured to give round the year cricket and this time it’s for the corporate teams. It’s an honour to have Waqar for this tournament who had done so well in his favourite cricket ground which has entered the Guinness Book of World Records for hosting the most number of ODIs in the World."

Mazhar Khan, the secretary of SCC,  said: “Any corporate team from across the world can participate. We have received enquiries from associate member countries too to be a part of the tournament. The matches will be held every Thursday, Friday and Saturday with eight to nine matches every day.

“There will be 16 groups and each group will have three teams. Each team will get to play a minimum of three matches in the historic Sharjah stadium and to interact with Waqar Younis. A total of 94 matches will be played in 12 days. There will be a lot of rules including the bowling run up limited to ten yards, size of the stadium and eight fielders will take the field in which two will be substitutes.

“It will be a good opportunity for  corporate houses and clubs  to exhibit their skills as this is  going to be a family affair and we want to make it an annual event,” Mazhar added.
