Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka stormed into the final of the US Open with crushing victories in Friday's semis to set up a classic showdown between the greatest player of her generation and the current world number one.

Maria Sharapova was frustrated by her three-set defeat to world number one Victoria Azarenka in Friday's US Open semi-final, but the Russian preferred to look on the bright side. "I'm looking forward to checking out the ice cream truck that's around the corner from my hotel," she said after her grand slam campaign ended one hurdle short of the final in a 3-6 6-2 6-4 loss.

There is no Roger Federer and no Rafa Nadal but still a sense of familiarity about Saturday's US Open men's semi-finals. Novak Djokovic, the dominant player for the past three seasons, will be making his sixth consecutive appearance in the semis, defending the title he won last year.
