The writing was on the wall for some time.

Even if the banners in the stands stood forlornly with the ‘In Arsene we trust’ cliché, on the pitch, the man who saved Wenger’s skin, may have now cooked him.

Robin van Perise’s reaction to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger substituting Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for Andrei Arshavin against Manchester United last Sunday may have been the straw that broke the Gunners’ belief.

Now the Daily Mail reports exclusively that Arsene Wenger is on a shortlist to replace Jose Mourinho as Real Madrid manager. dailymail

Germany head coach Joachim Low is the other candidate being considered.

The Portuguese, 48, was quoted as saying on Tuesday: “I don't know if I'll be at Real Madrid next season.”

Arsenal have lost their last three Premier League matches and are five points south of fourth-placed Chelsea, meaning missing out on Champions League qualification - something Wenger has called 'a disaster' - is a now almost a reality.

Doubts are also hanging over the future of his star player Robin van Persie, with Manchester City keen to sign the Holland striker.

Despite sitting five points clear of Pep Guardiola’s team at the top of the league, the former Chelsea manager is under increasing pressure, with rumours of a dressing room rift between him and the club’s Spanish players emerging.
