Dubai: Want to switch from a physical SIM card to an electronic or eSIM? Telecom providers across the UAE offer an easy option for users to switch to an eSIM, by completing the process completely online and – in many cases – for free.

But why exactly does one need to move to an eSIM? What are the benefits and what is the process? Here is all you need to know.

Why get an eSIM?

Depending on your phone model, you may be able to store up to eight eSIMS on your phone but can only have two active at a time. This helps reduce the hassle of physically changing SIM cards when you travel, or carrying multiple phones, if you have two numbers in the UAE.

According to etisalat, eSIMs also add an extra layer of security, like advanced authentication to keep your information private.

How much does it cost?

While an eSIM typically costs the same as a regular SIM – approximately AED25, etisalat, du and Virgin Mobile all have offers for customers, allowing them to switch to an eSIM for free, especially if you are using digital channels like the telecom companies official smartphone application.

Before you begin

The first thing to confirm is whether or not your phone supports an eSIM. An easy way to check that is to go to your phone’s settings and in the ‘networks’ or ‘cellular’ section, look for whether your phone is eSIM compatible.

Expat residents also need to make sure that they are in the UAE when they request for switching from a regular SIM to an eSIM.

How to get an eSIM from etisalat

One of the easiest ways to convert your existing SIM to an eSIM is through the etisalat app. These are the steps you need to follow:

  • Open the app and make sure you have logged in using your UAE PASS.
  • Go to your registered mobile number and tap on eSIM and then ‘activate eSIM’.
  • You will then be asked if you want to set up the eSIM on your smartphone or tablet, or an Apple Watch.
  • Click on ‘continue’
  • The app will then use the UAE PASS app, to once again verify your identity.
  • You will be asked to share the digital copy of your Emirates ID for the SIM replacement.
  • Check the ‘I consent to share this information with the service provider’ box and tap on ‘send document’.
  • Once the document is sent, the verification process will be complete. Before continuing with the switch, you will be informed that once you switch to an eSIM your existing SIM card will be disabled and replaced with the eSIM instead. Confirm these details and tap on ‘activate eSIM now’.
  • The activation may take a few minutes, after which you will receive a confirmation on the app as well as via email and SMS that your eSIM has been activated.

How to get an eSIM from du

According to du's official eSIM guide, you can complete the conversion from SIM card to eSIM through the official du app.

Before starting, make sure your device supports eSIM, is connected to Wi-Fi and has UAE PASS installed. Then, follow these steps:

  • Open the du app on your phone and from your personal dashboard, select ‘Get more done’ and then tap on ‘view more’.
  • Select 'View all' services and then tap on ‘manage SIM’.
  • Select the eSIM conversion option. You will once again be asked to log in using your UAE PASS. Once you have logged in, you will be asked to share the digital copy of your Emirates ID for the SIM replacement.
  • Approve the document-sharing request and complete the facial recognition verification using your phone camera.
  • Once the document has been submitted, confirm that you want to switch to an eSIM.
  • It may take a few minutes for the system to prepare your eSIM, after which you will receive a confirmation on the app, as well as via email and SMS that your eSIM has been activated.

How to get an eSIM from Virgin Mobile

Virgin Mobile also allows customers to switch to an eSIM through their official smartphone app. These are the steps you will have to follow:

  • Open the ‘Virgin Mobile UAE’ app and go to your profile. Ensure you are logged in using the UAE PASS.
  • Select 'My Numbers' and then tap on ‘Move to eSIM' for the number you wish to switch to an eSIM.
  • The app will then verify your identity using the UAE PASS. Once the digital documents are verified, you will have to confirm ‘Activate eSIM’.
  • The eSIM activation may take a couple of minutes. Once it is complete, you will receive a confirmation on the app, as well as via email and SMS.
