Dubai: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed the conversion of Al Satwa Roundabout into a signalised intersection, including upgrades to the road and its associated infrastructure. The project forms part of the RTA’s ongoing efforts to improve the efficiency of the road network and enhance traffic safety in line with Dubai’s urban growth and increasing traffic volumes.
The project is designed to provide a more convenient and efficient travel experience for road users by improving traffic flow along the roads connected to the intersection. It is expected to reduce travel times by 50% and cut waiting times and traffic queues by up to 60% during peak hours. The upgrade also enhances safety for all road users, including motorists and pedestrians.
The intersection serves traffic travelling between 2nd December Street, Al Satwa and the surrounding areas, facilitating movement between key arterial roads and the neighbourhood’s internal street network. The design also takes into account the movement of buses, improving the efficiency of their entry and exit from the area. This will help reduce delays, support smoother public transport operations and strengthen integration between the road network and public transport system.
The project derives its significance from the strategic location of the Al Satwa intersection and its role in regulating traffic to and from Al Satwa and neighbouring areas, including Business Bay, Al Bada’a, Al Jafiliya, Al Hudaiba and Jumeirah. It also improves access to Sheikh Zayed Road and the major corridors connected to it.
The upgrade complements other road development projects in the area, most notably the Trade Centre Roundabout development project. Together, these initiatives enhance the overall efficiency of the road network, strengthen connectivity between Dubai World Trade Centre, Sheikh Zayed Road and surrounding transport corridors, and contribute to more effective traffic distribution while reducing congestion at intersections and on connecting roads.
