Dubai: Own multiple cars in the UAE? From January 1, 2027, new road and traffic regulations are going to come into force in the country, once Cabinet Resolution No. 174 of 2026 comes into effect.

The Resolution covers various aspects of road use and traffic laws, including cases where a UAE resident owns more than two vehicles.

Here is all you need to know.

How many cars can I own?

According to Article 89 (2) of the Resolution, UAE residents will be given the vehicle licence for a maximum of two cars. Should they wish to register an additional vehicle under their name, an additional fee will be levied for each vehicle new or renewed, provided the total number of cars registered under the resident’s name does not exceed five.

Documents required to prove ownership of the vehicle

Article 90 of the Resolution lists out six different types of documents that would be legally accepted as proof of ownership of a vehicle:

  • Vehicle purchase document: Issued by the manufacturer, a registered car dealership or showroom, or through an electronic platform approved by the licensing authority.
  • Ownership transfer document: For other types of vehicle sales or transfers, a document certified by a notary public. Alternatively, the seller can sign the purchase document in front of an authorised licensing official or through approved digital channels, after their identity has been verified using an Emirates ID or approved digital identity.
  • Customs certificate: An electronic or paper customs clearance certificate for vehicles imported from abroad.
  • Inheritance documents: Official documents confirming the owner's death, inheritance and details of the estate, along with a declaration from all heirs appointing one person to be responsible for the vehicle.
  • Court judgement: An official copy of a court judgement establishing ownership of the vehicle.
  • Business licence: A copy of the business licence if the vehicle is being registered under a company or other legally authorised entity.

Documents required to register a vehicle under your name

Once you have the relevant proof of ownership of a vehicle, you would need to also provide the following documents in order to apply for a vehicle licence:

  • Verification of the owner’s identity via a digital ID.
  • Proof of ownership document.
  • The document appointing the owner’s legal representative, in cases where the law requires the appointment of a representative for the owner.
  • Vehicle Inspection Report.
  • Motor insurance policy. This may be submitted once the vehicle inspection has been carried out and the roadworthiness certificate is issued.
