At least 16 people killed in Colombia road accident

At least 16 people were killed and 15 more injured early Monday in a road accident in central Colombia, when a bus carrying 40 passengers overturned, police said.

The bus was heading from Bogota to the city of Cali, some 500 kilometers (310 miles) to the southwest, when it crashed, highway police commander Francisco Patino said.

Rescue workers were still on the scene Monday morning trying to free people still trapped on the bus.

Some of the injured were in serious condition, authorities said, with several transferred to the nearby hospital.

The death toll could rise as high as 26, said Alvaro Cruz, governor of Cundinamarca department, where the accident occurred, to the private Caracol Radio in Bogota.

Witness said the accident was prompted by faulty brakes, but police were still investigating the cause.
