Apple losing race in $64 billion market for not having iPad-cum-laptop

Apple could be working on a redesign for MacBook Pro and MacBook Air but the company could lose out heavily if it does not come out with an iPad Pro soon.

The market is waiting for an iPad cum notebook combination and Apple could well lose out on a $64 billion market if it fails to bring out a device that can combine the two.

Reports quoting senior JPMorgan analyst Rod Hall state that an iOS device priced between $500 and $1,000 and combine the features of a tablet cum laptop could easily sell about 25 million units.

Microsoft was the first to attempt to tap into the sector with its Surface pro, soon followed by various OEM’s which launched their own windows based devices.

There have been earlier reports that Apple has been working an 12.9 inch device that could well be an iPad Pro. But KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo earlier this year said that the Apple larger-sized iPad Pro will not be ready for release this year.

iWatch puts iStop to iPad: May call time on Apple's 12.9-inch tablet

We believe that Apple is currently missing a $63bn market opportunity by only partially playing in the $500-$1,000 laptop market via the iPad. Our central assumption is that lower priced laptop buyers are not willing to purchase what amounts to an expensive tablet that doesn’t fully replace a laptop. Should Apple address this market through iAnywhere we believe it could rapidly grow share toward the 40% it currently has in $1,000 laptops…,” sayd the  JPMorgan analysis.

Meanwhile, according to another report Apple could well be working on a redesign for its MacBook. A report by MacRumors quotes a forum - Weiphone.com - that it thinks is credible enough to be quoted as revealing details about a radical redesign for MacBook making it fanless, thereby significantly reducing the size of the device. The Current iPad Air is a fanless device. The report also states that Apple could introduce a new trackpad similar to what Microsoft has introduced in the Surface.
