Cosmetic and fragrance industry to follow Esma regulations

The Fragrance Foundation Arabia held recently a meeting with Emirates Standardization and Metrology Authority (Esma), where they discussed the standardization and regulation points of cosmetics and fragrance industry in the UAE market, and its big role to support the national economy.

Top regional manufacturers, international brand representatives, distributers and retailers attended the meeting. The objective of this meeting was to form a committee among ESMA and Fragrance Foundation Arabia members, for the regulations of the fragrance industry in the UAE. These regulations are in line with the global standards in the perfumery industry.

Mohamed Badri, Director General of Esma, said: “Our main mission is to emphasize on products safety, recognized risk management system for the safe use of fragrance ingredients, to make sure that there is no risk for the consumer or the environment. We continue to work to ensure the safe enjoyment of fragrances by implementing our local criteria in line with worldwide standards.”

He said: “After forming the regulation charter and approval from the cabinet, The Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology will grant an opportunity period of 6 months for the manufacturers and fragrance merchants in the UAE to modify some of its fragrant products, which do not match with international standards.”

Shahzad Haider, Chairman Fragrance Foundation Arabia, invited on all key industry players in the fragrance industry to come forward to formulate the National Committee to draft Technical Regulations based on international standards, ensuring priority for adaption/adoption. This technical group will comprise of regional international brands, manufacturers, traders, certification labs and institutes. The Perfume Foundation Arabia has initiated a process which will help and support the industry to reach at power to international standards.

The consumption of perfumes per capita in the Middle East is among the highest in the world, according to a report by the Fragrance Foundation Arabia. While the global economic environment remains uncertain, we are confident that this region will continue to increase perfume sales"

The Middle East Fragrance Summit 2012 will be held in Dubai during May 27–28.
