Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada), in cooperation with the Department of Transport (DOT), has announced that the work of the Abu Dhabi international airport road network and interchange is progressing in line with the schedule, which will allow the delivery of the project during the fourth quarter of 2017 as planned.

“The project is an initiative of DOT’s 2014-2019 strategic plan aiming to enable the transport sector to effectively and efficiently serve the economic sector in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi,” said Faisal Ahmed Al Suwaidi, DOT’s General Director of Main Roads.

The design work was completed back in 2013 and the construction work was later awarded by Musanada.

The project aims to connect the new passenger terminal of Abu Dhabi international airport to the E10 carriageway, providing a direct access to and from it to the capital, Dubai and Al Ain, in addition to the widening of Abu Dhabi – Al Shahama road (E10) from the existing 4 lanes to 5 lanes in both ways, together with the widening of the presidential flight road.

“With an 11.85 per cent actual percentage of completion to date, all works are progressing as per the plan carefully developed by Musanada to deliver the project in accordance with highest international standards and specifications and as per the agreed schedule,” said Omar Matar Al Mansouri, Musanada’s Acting Roads Director.

“The project, with a total cost of approximately Dh657 million, will include the development of the Abu Dhabi international airport intersection through four 5.6 km (of which 4.8km bridges) single-direction connecting roads, the construction of an underpass leading to Yas Island, and an overpass connecting Yas Island and the Airport City A,” added Al Mansouri.

“This will also include the widening of E10 road from the existing 4 lanes to 5 lanes in both directions, for a total length of 8km, the construction of a secondary 3.7km 3-lane road network that will connect the Yas Island tunnel to the E10 road and between intersection No.6 and the E12 road.

“In addition, the road from E10 and the presidential flight building will be widened from dual 2 lanes to dual 3 lanes in both directions and the construction of a bridge that will serve the presidential flight and Masdar City. A storm water pumping station with the associated storm water drainage network will also be constructed to serve the E12/E10 intersection.”

Al Mansouri reiterated Musanada’s constant commitment to the sustainability best green standards, by making sure to follow best practices to preserve natural resources and protect the environment.

Several workshops and training sessions were held for the various team members, addressing the sustainability-related principles and guidelines necessary to ensure the implementation of the sustainability program mandated by the government of Abu Dhabi during the execution of the project in relation to the resources, building materials and minimization of waste, in addition to ensuring the implementation of sustainability-compliant state-of-art technologies to enhance and improve the efficient use of resources and preservation of various energy resources.

Al Mansouri emphasized that there was close cooperation with Abu Dhabi Airports Company and all the concerned authorities to ensure the adherence to the agreed schedule and that the project would be delivered as planned, i.e. simultaneously with the opening of the Abu Dhabi international airport new compound. He praised and highlighted the efforts made by the various teams who efficiently managed to overcome all the challenges facing the project, whether those related to the design and associated approvals, or to in situ soil, to ensure the works progress as planned and in accordance with highest standards.
