Dubai Municipality has given go-ahead to the eco-friendly ‘Desert Rose City’ project, said a press statement.

The project, to be built in Al Ruwayyah area, will produce 40 per cent of electricity and 40,000 cubic metres of potable water for the residents of the community, Arabic daily 'Emarat Al Youm' reported on Tuesday.

Designed in a Desert Rose shape, Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said the integrated city will house schools, shopping centres, clinics, hospitals, mosques, police station and other services.

Relying largely on renewable energy sources to meet its needs, the city will have a waste recycling facility and eco-friendly buildings to help reduce electricity consumption.

Emirates 24l7 reported last year that the city would cover an area of 4,000 hectares and house 160,000 inhabitants at an estimated cost of Dh30 billion.

Addressing the Destination Dubai 2020 conference last year, Abdulla Mohammed Rafia, Assistant Director General for Engineering and Planning Sector, Dubai Municipality, had said: “We will have 30,000 dwellings in the project of which 20,000 will be for Emiratis and 10,000 will be affordable housing for expatriates.”

Hussain Lootah said in a statement that the City has been designed keeping in mind a quiet and peaceful environment for the residents with a large dedicated to greenery to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
