Firm penalised over late wages

Labour authorities have decided to punish a company based in the eastern oasis town of Al Ain after it defaulted in paying the wages of nearly 350 workers, the semi official daily Alittihad reported on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Labour said it had referred the unnamed firm to court after failing to settle the wage problem and that it had decided to stop issuing new licences to that company and all other related firms.

The Ministry said it had taken such measures after receiving a complaint by those workers that the company had failed to pay their wages on time in violation of the “wage protection system” introduced by the UAE recently to ensure all workers and employees get their salaries on time.

“We have decided to stop dealing with that company in Al Ain and to halt the issuance of any new work licences to it and all other companies which are related to the owner of that company,” said Mohsen Al Nasi, director of the labour inspection section at the Ministry of Labour.

“We are also taking measures to refer that company to the general prosecutor after we failed to settle the issue between the two parties.”

He said the workers had been given a choice to move to other companies in line with existing laws which allow expatriates to change sponsorship in case their relationship with a company comes to an end.
