The UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) announced that the World Summit Award (WSA) mobile database is now open to nominations for the mobile content contest which will be held in Abu Dhabi at the end of the year. The TRA urged all entities, both public and private, interested in participation, to submit their applications before the set deadline of April 29th, 2014.

The TRA will assess the applications through a technical specialized committee to nominate one application for each of the eight categories. The official announcement of the selected UAE finalists is scheduled for May 29th, 2014.

As the ‘National Expert’ of the United Arab Emirates, the TRA is responsible for nominating candidates for the upcoming mobile contest in collaboration with the WSA. The contest is a global initiative to select and promote the world’s best in mobile content and innovative applications.

The award consists of eight m-WSA categories that reflect the most crucial social issues facing people globally. These include: m-Government & Participation; m-Environment & Health; m-Learning & Education; m-Entertainment & Lifestyle; m-Tourism & Culture; m-Media & News; m-Business & Commerce and m-Inclusion & Empowerment.

Applying can be done through the website of the TRA by downloading the application form on the link: https://www.tra.gov.ae/wsa-2014.php. For more information on conditions and criteria for winning, applicants can visit: https://www.wsa-mobile.org

"Our participation in the WSA contest this year is incredibly important as the UAE has entered the era of mGovernment since the announcement of the mGovernment initiative in May 2013. As the regulatory body concerned with development of ICT in the UAE, we encourage innovation and development of mobile phone applications and are keen to promote ease of use and quality standards such as mobile cyber security," said Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, TRA Director General.

The WSA Mobile Awards 2014 is widely recognized as being the frontrunner in the global showcase of mobile content and innovation. The UAE has traditionally had a strong showing in the contest and we expect an even higher level and number of submissions for this edition which gives us the opportunity to nominate the very best mobile content and applications from the UAE. It is well known that quality standards are continuously developing and advancing due to the technical developments. Moreover users’ behavior are also evolving with the growth of mobile applications.

"We look forward to participation from both the public and private sectors, and we invite everyone to process their applications before the deadline. We also hope that all applicants win the prize in order to reflect the UAE’s advanced status in the field of mobile applications and smart government," Al Ghanim added.

The WSA contest is a global initiative to select and promote the world’s best in mobile content and innovative applications within the framework of, and in cooperation with, the United Nation’s World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), mandated by the WSIS Plan of Action and executed in collaboration with United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and Global Alliance for ICT and Development (GAID).
